Why is my fan running continuously?

Hello,

I recently took my macbook pro to the Apple Authorized Servicer to get it worked on. Apparently the flex cable for the hard drive was bad, which caused my computer to not boot up when powered on. That issue was resolved, but literally 24 hours after getting my laptop back, it started having other problems.

My computer had many syptoms that were listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Mostly these were the symptoms:

  • The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
  • The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
  • Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
  • The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
  • The display would flicker while trying to boot up, then the whole system would turn off.

For a while, my computer would not even turn on at all. Now my computer seems to startup properly everytime. The battery indicator lights still do not function, but I can use the computer and all of my data is still as it was.

The main issue that still persists is that the fan runs at high speed all the time. My CPU usage is low, I checked in activities monitor, and nothing was out of the ordinary. I am not running any high CPU applications. And according to iStat, all the temperatures within my computer are running under 100 degrees.

I'm pretty sure I successfully reset the SMC, as when I held down the Shift-Control-Option keys with the power button, the LED on my magsafe changed colors, as noted it would in the instructions.

I would appreciate any and all help, as I am in Africa and another trip to the local Apple Authorized Servicer would be quite a hassle.

Thanks!

Battery is running hot and not holding charge after update

After a recent update to the system, my battery is not holding a charge and is running hot.  I'm worried that this will cause other problems within the system.  Has anyone else experienced similar problems?  Can I get rid of the recent update?  Is there a solution?

Is there a way to disable battery charging when running off of AC power?

I have a mid 2011 Macbook pro unibody, without a removable battery. I keep my Macbook plugged in for hours on end while working at my desk while hooked up to a Thunderbolt display. I was wondering if there was a way to just bypass the battery and run straight off of AC power without charging the battery, as to prolong battery life.

Thanks in advance for any contributions,

Jake

Macbook 13" Late 2011 Problems - Erratic battery, loud, running hot.

Hi,

I've spoken to Apple Support however I was just wondering if I could get some extra information, the guy didn't answer all of my questions.

So last Thursday I stupidly installed Norton 360 Multi-Device on my MBP 13'' Late 2011 Model. After installation, the laptop started running loudly and the space above the keyboard where the fan is ran really hot. I immediately uninstalled it, and removed the Norton Backup files from my computer. However upon the next start-up the day after, my battery would give 30-45mins on a full charge.

I reset the NVRAM and PRAM and resetted the systems management controller. This recified my laptop from showing "1-2hrs remaining". However now the battery remaining status bar fluctuates between 4hrs and at one stage displayed 9hrs. I am in the process of calibrating the battery, however I have no idea what to do from there if it doesn't work.

My printer had been printing 20 copies of the one document, so I removed the printer off the network, but I can no longer pick it up to re-add it again.

I've been assured this is a hardware problem and not a virus, but I was wondering if anyone had any other opinions or advice?

Much appreciated!
