Relation between low capacity battery for Powerbook G4 12" and logic board

Hi, I just got Powerbook G4 12". Currently, the remaining capacity of my original rechargeable battery has 321 mAh available, which is around 8 minutes left if I don't plug the AC adapter. While I'm still looking for new original battery for my PB, is it okay if I use the battery with having AC adapter plugged to my PB?, will it affect the logic board? or any significant component?.

spilled acetone on logic board, fans stuckon max, battery not recognized

Hi,

so my older core 2 duo 2.33 15in MacBook Pro started to overheat, often to the point of shutting down, and that's just when in word processing. Flash or video games? Let's just say you could fry an egg if you flipped it upside down.

 

After having some cooling pads, I got sick of the issue and troubleshot it all the way down to bad thermal paste. I cracked it open (it was already past Applecare) and applied Artic 5. That solved the heat issue (along with air-blasting the insides).

 

Now, being the klutz that I am, while I was cleaning the old thermal compound off, I knocked over and spilled a bottle of acetone all over the motherboard. Twice. After letting it dry for a day, the computer booted up, but the keyboard was not recognized, the fans were stuck on full blast, and the battery was not recognized by the computer, nor would it charge. It would still power the laptop without the magsafe plugged in.

 

The keyboard problem went away (further drying, I suspect) but fans and battery issue did not.

I tried restarting and doing the SMU reset several times with no luck (I have no indication I did it right in the first place because nothing is different). Now the computer itself runs fine, with fans stuck on full blast the thing barely exceeds room temperatures. But it's loud. And the battery does not charge, and that not only means I can't use it without it constantly being plugged in, I also won't have the back-up power once the battery drains in case someone knocks out the mag-safe. I DJ in Ableton Live and I played a show on it in a hot room after the botched operation and it was fine, but someone (drunk) knocked out the mag-safe and that will no longer work once the battery drains.

 

Any thoughts? Is it possible i missed a couple of sensors while assembling it (although I'm pretty mrticulous when it comes to that), did I permanently ruin the motherboard? Am I just a complete hack that can't do SMU reset correctly?

Battery vs Logic Board?

Hello a couple of days I noticed that my computer was about to turn off because I had 3% battery life left.

As I procceded to get the charger, I plug it in, and the computer shut off. I noticed the magsafe did not change color, so i tried a another charger, no dice.

Then when i connected my charger, then I did a SMC reset, and I noticed that the light did not change color. I pressed the power buttton, and heard the apple chime, within a couple of seconds the computer was off again.

 

Being that this was a mac without a removable battery, I very carefullly anaylized the situation, and removed the battery, I plugged in the computer via AC power and it booted, normal. I tried again with the battery, and again it shut it self off. I removed the battery, and contiuned to use the laptop as a desktop, until I was able to get it to the apple store.

 

A couple of days later, the AC adaptor provides me with the same symptoms as if I had the battery in. Boots up, and shuts right back down.

 

Now Im wondering if the AC adaptor can not give the compuer enough energy for boot up. but then that does explain why it was running on AC for 3 days.

So my question is, is it the logic board?

 

My Apple care is over, and im scared to know how much this repair is going to cost.

DC-in board replaced, but iBook stops charging after 7-9% increments

This is a G4 1.2 iBook running 10.5.8. I've tried the PRAM and PMU procedures repeatedly without impact. Here are my battery specifics before I describe the problem:

I'm using a replacement battery and adaptor but until a few months ago everything was normal until the battery stopped charging after a maximum of 9% addition. In other words, I could go from 12 to 21% then charging stopped even if the adaptor is still plugged in. If I remove the battery and put it back after waiting 15 seconds or more, charging restores and I'm good for another 7-9%. Repeat procedure, toward 100% or close enough. The iBook worked fine on battery power other than the countdown strangely stalling at 5% remaining, where it will sit for an extraordinarily long time before showing the Low Battery warning and then quickly konking out.

 

Since the iBook is no longer our primary computer I let the situation exist until it got noticeably worse. Sometimes I'd have to take out and replace the battery several times before charging resumed toward another 7-9%. Finally charging stopped -- period -- with the battery drained completely.

The iBook would sporadically recgnize the adaptor. I'd be running fine then the computer would quit in a flash, sometimes going to sleep while typically requiring a restart. Only if I twisted and moved the adaptor plug would the iBook eventually ackowledge the cable and allow the startup procedure, often quitting in midstream.

 

Last week I purchased a new adaptor and sent away for a replacement (used) DC-in board. The adaptor was an improvement, recognized by the iBook. But I still couldn't charge the battery. This afternoon I replaced the DC-in board. For a few minutes it appeared everything was wonderful until charging stopped at exactly 9%. So I'm back to familiar ground, no different than a few weeks ago with the original DC-in board. I've amused myself by taking out the battery and gaining another 7-9%, now up to 77% as I type this.

 

Does anyone have any ideas or similar experience? Obviously the DC-in board was an issue since my situation changed markedly today when it was replaced. But perhaps it's not the sole problem. I guess it's possible the used DC-in board that I purchased cheap on eBay was in similar declining condition to my original one, despite "Tests OK," and now I'm stuck in the same predicament as the past few months.
