Battery Monitor Not Operating Correctly

I bought a Macbook Pro 13" in April 2012. [Brand new from the Apple store near Central Park, NY]

Two days ago, the battery and its various monitoring levels have begun to act up.

Right now on the menu bar - the battery icon has an X in it. If this does change to a battery percentage, the percentage will remain the same, at whatever level it starts at 53% or 77%. Everthing else on the menu bar is correct - time changes, etc.

If I unplug the power cable, the computer will power down on some occasions, and not on others.

Now the green light (for fully charged) is showing on the cable. I just unplugged it and it did shut down.

When I pressed the battery indicator on the side of the computer, three green dots lit up.

My software is up-to-date. I have also noticed the computer running slower of the past few days too.

After less than a year, I wouldn't expect this to be a problem. Has anyone had a similar problem?

I'm now in the Republic of Ireland, and unfortunately we have yet to have an Apple Store open here, so there is no Genius Bar that I can bring it too.

Any help that anyone might have, will be extremely appreciated.
