cant hear music lyrics

I have a later generation iPod nano and yesterday i went to listen to music and i coudnt hear the lyrics at all, but the music was still playing. I did go as far as to check the EQ settings in my nano's settings, but found that i hadnt set any EQ settings. I have had this issue before and remember that it is some setting somewhere, but simply forgot where it was or what to look for.
