battery won't stay charged...indicators show conflicting statements

received a brand new 160gb ipod classic as a wedding gift from my wife last year. i keep in impeccable condition, use it frequently, recharge it often. turned off when not in use, and hold button is applied to prevent unwanted usage. recharged until lightning bolt is seen in green indicator, and then unplugged properly. no problems otherwise.

last month, out of the blue, off a full charge, my ipod just shut off. when i turned it back on, said that i needed to plug it in because the battery was dead. i thought maybe i didn't turn it off and my 10 million song archive played until it died. that wasn't the case. i recharged it that night, went to use it the next day in my car to work, and the same thing happened. took me a couple days before i restored it to factory settings and resynced everything. still the same results.

yesterday, i noticed that the green battery indicator in the right corner showed a full charge. yet, during my twenty minute playback before it shut off, the indicator on the screen (the one that pops up after a few minutes of unuse during song playback) showed a sliver and in near red. then it shut off.

i've searched forums up and down and i'm still not sure if the battery is dead or it's something with the software. people who have experienced battery issues do not have the same results as mine. i've had about four different ipods (not the itouches, i mean the older music only ones) and i've never had battery issues after 18 months of use. my last 30gb video ipod was beat to **** and never charged properly and it never experienced any of these issues.

please someone help me with this. it's one of my most prized possessions, personally engraved, and i want it to work properly.

thanks in advance
