My ipod touch battery in the top right says it is full when the large icon in the middle of the screen says it is not full?

I plugged my ipod touch in to be charged because the battery is 20% and after a few minutes of charging it says on the right hand corner that it is full, but the large battery in the center of the screen says it is dead. Then I unplug it and it says the battery is 20%. How do I get it the charge?
